Easy Father's Day Album Idea

Years ago when my kids were little I started a “Father’s Day Album” for my husband. The idea was to choose just a handful of photos of my husband with our kids each year, and update the album annually so that over time he would have a beautiful album showcasing his life as a dad. The first year I gave him a mostly empty album with just 10 pictures, but that’s okay – he understood the idea! And now that he has been a father for over 17 years, we have created a beautiful record of many of his memories with the kids. The best part is it’s a little gift to him every year, and it’s so easy for me to do! Also, he looks forward to it every year. In fact, a few years ago I actually forgot to update it, and on Father’s Day he opened a gift and said, somewhat disappointedly, “Oh, I thought this was my Father’s Day Album.” Whoops! But I updated it within a few days because it is THAT easy.

Here’s how you can start this easy yet meaningful gift too:

  • Get a pocket style album. I use the the 11x14 pocket albums by Creative Memories because I like that it has 10 photos across a 2-page spread. I’m on Volume 2 now! If you want some decorative paper like you see here in the sample pages of my album, get a couple of the Variety Mat Packs as well. But paper is not necessary - you can also just slip photos in and be done!

  • Choose 10 photos from the last year of your partner with his kids. I try to find photos that really showcase my husband being a dad. More so than perfectly-posed photos, I try to choose dad-in-action photos such as him teaching the kids how to ride a bike, playing a game with them, or just being silly with the kids. Selecting photos like this has created a really unique album over time and serves as a reminder to my husband that he has done so much for our kids.

  • If your kids are toddlers or older, consider having them write or draw on a small journaling card to include in one of the photo slots. Seeing their handwriting change over the years is really fun!

  • I include a quote every year just because there is a little space at the bottom of my pocket style pages; I just go on Pinterest or Google and find a new quote each year about being a great dad.

  • Don’t worry if your kids are not babies anymore; it’s never too late to start this tradition! You can just begin with this year, or go back and find 8-10 photos per year for the last how-many-every-years since he became a dad. It’s never too late to make that special dad in your life feel appreciated!

 Have fun!
